Former Solicitor-General of Bermuda and Senior Crown Counsel Norman MacDonald joins Rogerson Law Group

Rogerson Law Group is expanding its litigation practice by welcoming – Norman MacDonald, J.D., LL.M., to its Toronto office. MacDonald most recently served as Senior Crown Counsel and acting Solicitor-General for the Government of Bermuda.

“Norman MacDonald is a great addition to our team,” said Andrew Rogerson, Principal at Rogerson Law Group. “His experience in successfully defending clients and his work in Bermuda is beyond impressive.”

MacDonald has over twenty-five years of litigation and dispute resolution experience in a wide array of civil and criminal matters. He has significant international experience and has worked in Finland, the Netherlands, England and Bermuda.

In Bermuda, he saved the government over $3 million in the case of Bermuda Gas v The Tax Commissioner [2015] SC (Bda) 30 App (5 May 2015) in which the Appellant, Bermuda Gas, appealed the denial of a tax concession that had been introduced to stimulate the retail sector of the economy. MacDonald represented the Tax Commissioner at the hearing of the appeal, arguing that the Appellant did not qualify for the concession. The appeal was dismissed.

“I am excited for this new journey at Rogerson Law Group,” MacDonald said. “I am proud to be part of an amazing group of talented and passionate team members. Rogerson Law Group has an excellent reputation both in Canada and globally and I look forward to expanding the services of the firm through my practice.”

MacDonald also has proven advocacy in workplace harassment and bullying cases and in Constitutional Law. In the first case of its kind in Bermuda, he successfully defended the Minister of Education in a lengthy trial in which the plaintiff claimed to have suffered PTSD from bullying in the workplace, while she was employed by the Ministry of Education as a school teacher.  In other cases, he successfully defended the Government in several Constitutional Relief claims.

Prior to working in Bermuda, MacDonald had his own private practice in Toronto where he successfully practiced tax litigation and dispute resolution, employment law, and commercial litigation. He developed an expertise in advising clients of high net worth on offshore trusts, international business corporations and other asset protection vehicles. He has represented clients before all courts in Ontario, the Federal Court of Canada, the Tax Court of Canada, and the Supreme Court.

In addition to his work with clients, he was a professor of employment, human rights, Canadian and international business law.

MacDonald has a Master of Laws degree (LL.M.) from the London School of Economics and Political Science, London, England, and a Juris Doctorate from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
